Tom Klaban’s father told him to jump – he did. Over the Iron Curtain and into the Free World. It made his entire family into Cold War refugees.
With his eye on America and its dream, Tom’s journey took him from refugee camps, the trauma of immigration and to play for Ohio State Buckeyes.
The Iconic Woody Hayes didn’t play a kicking game… until he saw the sidewinder.

Tom Klaban is a pioneer in the field of computer and software engineering.
He founded several companies including Chiefs Inc. in 1980, Tools/400 Inc. in 1989 and Cyber 9-1-1 Inc. in 2012 and continues to be an entrepreneurial force. Tom was one of the earliest students to earn a degree in the fledgling computer field at the Ohio State Fisher College of Business, became the starting place kicker for the Buckeyes Football Team, and played under the Coach, Woody Hayes.
Woody had a proven winning strategy that focused on strong defense, a big offensive line, and a great running game. He did not like the passing game and he liked the kicking game even less. Not only did Tom challenge Woody’s perception about kicking, he redefined it by not only being the first soccer style sidewinder kicker in Buckeye history, but the only kicker to ever beat the team up north with only field goals. Tom’s extraordinary story of escaping communism, learning multiple languages, and becoming my teammate is both fascinating and unlikely; it is what the American dream is all about. ‘’
